How Many Photos Your Listing Really Needs?

How many photos should a listing have?

You know, this comes up all the time when I’m sitting with sellers around here, usually over a cup of coffee at the kitchen table. Someone always leans in and asks, “So… how many photos does my listing actually need?” And honestly, the answer’s simpler than people think.

A good listing should feel like a story. Not a novel, not a postcard — just the full picture of what it’s like to live in the home. Around Southeastern Massachusetts, most places hit that sweet spot with about twenty‑five to forty photos. That’s usually enough to show the flow of the rooms, the natural light, the updates you’ve made, and the little details buyers love without overwhelming them.

Too few photos and buyers feel like something’s missing. Too many and they start scrolling like they’re flipping through a phone dump. The goal is to guide them, not exhaust them. Think of it like walking someone through your home in person. You’d show them the highlights, the layout, the charm — but you wouldn’t drag them through every closet unless they asked.

So when you’re prepping your home for the market, aim for that balanced middle. Enough photos to tell the whole story, but not so many that buyers lose the plot. Around here, that 25–40 range does the trick for most homes, and it keeps buyers engaged from the first click to the last.
