How do you always find the best spots to take photos?
As a real estate photographer, I’ve learned that the best photo spots aren’t always the most obvious ones.
The first thing I look for is natural light. Rooms with large windows, open layouts, or sunlight streaming in tend to photograph beautifully and give a more accurate sense of the home’s atmosphere.
I also try to stand in corners rather than directly in front of a feature. This usually captures more of the room and helps show the flow between spaces. In living rooms, kitchens, and primary bedrooms, a corner angle often tells the story better than a straight-on shot.
Another trick is to focus on what makes the home unique. It could be a stunning fireplace, custom built-ins, a spacious kitchen island, a backyard view, or a cozy reading nook. Those details are often what you’ll remember later when comparing properties.
Outside, I like to walk around the property before taking photos. Sometimes the best shot of a home comes from the garden, patio, or a spot that frames both the house and the surrounding landscape.
Most importantly, I take photos from the perspectives I’ll actually experience as an owner—walking through the entryway, standing at the kitchen sink, or looking out a favorite window. Those views often end up being the most meaningful.
The best photo spots aren’t necessarily the most dramatic—they’re the places that capture how the home feels to live in.
